The Municipality of Fre had been one of the four municipalities of Apokorona which were established in 1880, and it included 14 villages with a total of 4329 inhabitants. Its historical course has been one of great importance, rich in both national and cultural events. The municipality of Fre was reformed in 1998 for historical reasons, and this led to a municipality with a small population and therefore with low growth prospects. Its expanse spreads over almost 14000 acres of land, amphitheatrically placed along the foothills of the Lefka Ori (White Mountains) mountain range. It includes five municipal departments, with a total population of 1117 people. Although it has been characterized as a landscape of distinctive natural beauty, its agricultural output cannot support a large population, and therefore many locals have immigrated, leaving the region depopulated. Nevertheless, both those who have remained home and those who have sought better fortunes abroad, the people of Fre share a deep reverence for their homeland and engage in a constant effort to beautify and improve it. To this end, they have formed many cultural clubs that preserve their customs and their cultural heritage. It is our hope that local societies will soon find their way to progress by investing on a mild development of tourism and on the production of high quality agricultural products, as planned out by the municipal authorities. There are four dairy workshops that produce delicious traditional cheeses (graviera, anthotyro and myzithra), two traditional furniture workshops, five olive processing plants that produce premium quality olive oil, and a locust bean mill offering products for herding and industrial purposes. Recent efforts encourage the development of traditional lodging facilities, in accordance to the broader plan that aims to exploit the prospects of the Lefka Ori mountain range that extends above the villages of the municipality.
