Welcome to Hotel Porfyron

Porfyron means purple and hotel Porfyron stands like a red beacon between the grey, natural stone built houses of the picturesque village of Ano Pedina. This is one of the 46 still occupied Zagoria villages in the Epiros, situated in the north western region of Greece, 35 kilometres north of Ioannina.

This pleasant hotel was built in 1850 as a doctor´s residence and was later used as a girls´ school. It has eight spacious, tastefully furnished rooms. Each room has been named after a famous mountain top in Greece. During the restoration of the building, the original character has been preserved as much as possible. Fretwork ceilings dating back 150 years still adorn the entrance and can also be found upstairs. All rooms have a shower and toilet (2 rooms have a Jacuzzi bath) and most of the rooms also have a fireplace.

The owners, Jiannis en Rita Kirligitsis, attach much value to the Greek tradition and give their guests a warm welcome, making sure they feel at home. In the hotel´s restaurant, the owners prepare fresh regional dishes daily (also catering for the vegetarians) with ingredients from their own garden or the surrounding countryside. Most of the bread is homemade and Rita´s favourite pursuit is making jams, marmalades and liqueurs. You will find them in several special flavours such as elderberry and chanterelle. Jiannis also makes his own red wine and sipero (raki).
You can taste the delicious homemade jams with the extensive breakfast.

The village of Ano Pedina is lovely and quiet and is an excellent base for exploring the surrounding countryside. Zagoria is a fantastic area for both short and long distance walks with flora and fauna of a rare and unknown beauty.

We are sure that you will feel comfortable here at the hotel Porfyron, many of our guests have enjoyed their visit so much that they like to return regularly.

We wish you a pleasant stay - we will always do our best for you!

History

After running the hotel Orestis House in Ano Pedina for many years, Jiannis and Rita Kirligitsis decided to cut the Gordian knot to reach their long entertained desire. They bought an uninhabited aristocratic house in the village of Ano Pedina opposite the church with the goal to restore it and convert into a hotel.

The house was built in 1850 and functioned until 1960 as a doctor´s residence. After that it was used for 25 years as a girls´ school.
The restoration began in 2000. For Jiannis and Rita it was very important to retain as much of the original character and colour of the building during the restoration, the 150 years old ceilings for example. This caused many problems but the end result is admirable.
At the end of 2005, the works were finally finished and the house shone forth in all its glory. Hotel Porfyron was now complete.

Porphyrohospes

Porphyrohospes In the great Byzantine Empire the Roman the Imperial Palace had a room lined with Imperial Porphyry. It was in this room that the imperial offspring was born, they were the porphyrogenitus, " the ones born in purple".

Nowadays none are born in purple, but there are those who have stayed in purple. They have found their way to Ano Pedina, the small getaway to the Zagori. They enjoyed a holiday in the Porfyron, the purple house. In this enchanting hotel they were cared for by Yiannis and Rita Kirligitsis Berends. Strengthened by her unsurpassable breakfast, they set out to explore the Zagori, to return in time for his excellent genuine cooking, everything fresh from Ioannina´s markets. Ioannina, the lake, the cita- del. Their enchan- ting goal for the next day. How quickening is the quietude in the evening.

A returning herd in the distance, a good glass close at hand. Pleasant company, life as it should be. Lucky them. One might call them por- phyrohospes the ones who stayed in Porfyron.

Geography and ecology

Epirus is a rugged and mountainous region. It is largely made up of mountainous limestone ridges, part of the Dinaric Alps, that in places reach 2,650 m. In the east, the Pindus Mountains that form the spine of mainland Greece separate Epirus from Macedonia and Thessaly. Most of Epirus lies on the windward side of the Pindus. The winds from the Ionian Sea offer the region more rainfall than any other part of Greece. The climate of Epirus is mainly alpine. The vegetation is made up mainly of coniferous species. The animal life is especially rich in this area and features, among other species, bears, wolves, foxes, deer and lynxes.

Zagori

is an area in the Pindus mountains in Epirus, in northwest Greece. It has an area of some 1,000 square kilometers and 45 villages known as Zagoria or the Zagorohoria, and is in the shape of an upturned equilateral triangle. The southern vertex of the triangle is the provincial capital, Yiannina (Ioannina); the south-southwest side is formed by the mountain Mitsikeli (1,810m); the Aoos river and Mt Tymphe constitute the northern side, and the east-southeast side runs along the Varda river to Mt Mavrovouni (2,100m) near Metsovo.

According to the most recent figures, the population of the area is about 5,000, which gives a population density of 5 inhabitants per square kilometer, as opposed to an average of 73.8 for Greece as a whole.

The Vikos Gorge

One of the gorges of Zagori located in the Vikos-Aoos National Park, stands out from all the others for its dimensions and for its awe-inspiring beauty. The gorge collects the waters of a number of small rivers and leads them into the Voidomatis which rises in the Gorge.

The Vikos Gorge is one of the deepest gorges in the world, second only to the Grand Canyon in Arizona. In fact, the walls of the Vikos gorge, at about 1.040 m (3,120 ft) at places, are the steepest anywhere. As a natural phenomenon, it has to be seen to be believed. Over and above its grandeur, however, the Vikos Gorge is of a major scientific interest because it is in almost virgin condition and its ecosystems are many and various. This is one of the reasons for which it forms the heart of the Vikos-Aoos National Park, which is a refuge for many endangered species of animal.
Despite the undoubted passage of the Slavs as testified to by numerous placenames changes in the human element in Zagori have come about exceptionally slowly, and to talk of real continuity of population is no exaggeration.
