The town of Didymoteicho spreads along the territory where Evros, the large mythic river of the Balkans which serves as the border between two civilizations, receives the flow of one of its most significant tributaries, the river Erythropotamos. Its name, ?Didymaric Castle?, was derived from the two neighboring castellated hills, Plotinoupolis and Kale. There are two main elements that characterize this land and its history; the one is continuity, the other the existence of a multicultural background. There is no period throughout the course of history where the city fades into insignificance. From the twin hamlets of the Neolithic Era and the settlements of Iron Age through the Classical era and the Age of Rome, when the city of Plotinoupolis rising to prominence, then giving way to the fortified city of Didymoteicho during the Byzantine years, when it became the favored city of every emperor. It temporarily served as the capital city of Byzantium and as the base of the Ottoman Empire during the meta-Byzantine period. The future of Didymoteicho follows the course of its history, and today it is a thriving, modern city. Nowadays Didymoteicho is the commercial center and the administrative center of the entire district and it hosts the regional Administration Headquarters, the Ecclesiastical Center, the Military Division HQ, the Police Academy, and the Hospital. An ascent to the castle through the cobblestone paved alleys of the old town will compensate you, as will a stroll along the Armenian neighborhood with the traditional buildings and a visit to the large mosque, the oldest on European soil, with its impressive, lead coated vault. Enjoy a walk through Kislades with the marble fountain and to the archaeological site of Plotinoupolis with its magnificent mosaics; visit the Folk Art, the Military, and the Ecclesiastical Museums, as well as the Picture Gallery of the painter Dimitrios Nalbandis. Take pleasure in the fresh copse at the landscape of Tsigla with a view to neighboring Turkey and to the rivers of Evros and Erythropotamos. Explore the cave of Vouva, on the beginning of the route from Didymoteicho to Mt. Koufovouno; the bat colonies within are truly unique. All you have to do is to allow your senses to enjoy it all!
