The Municipality of Karpathos
Karpathos is located at the edge of the Southeastern reaches of the Aegean Sea, between the islands of Crete and Rhodes. It is an island that provides a unique combination of untouched beaches and imposing mountains with picturesque, traditional villages etched upon their slopes. Even in these days, tradition remains vivid in all twelve villages. This is evidenced by the frequent appearance of local women in traditional garments, even while performing their daily activities, as well as by the customary ?seated festivals?, which are held frequently and frivolously.
The successive, often unexpected alternations of the landscape of Karpathos, where rugged mountainous regions fade into gentle reclusive beaches or impressive rocky shorelines, enchant its visitors, compelling them to explore it thoroughly. This task holds rich rewards in store; fresh springs hidden within pine tree forests; lonely chapels virtually carved upon the rocks that tower above the rocky shores; and countless unimaginable, truly breathtaking viewpoints.
A plethora of beaches, which number more than fifty, offers to the visitor a variety of dreamy natural settings with exotic names such as Apella, Achata, the Well of Christ, Kyra Panagia, and the garden of Michalios. Some are strewn with white sands, others with colorful pebbles, and in each case they are framed by emerald, crystal clear waters. Many offer organized facilities that include water sports, with an emphasis on windsurfing, as this is where the international speed surf competition will be held.
The traditional delicacies of Karpathos are the delicious psilokouloura cookies, which are distributed to guests in baptisms and weddings, the intriguing onion bread, which is bread baked with slender slices of onion, and the tasteful makarounes, which is hand made pasta. Karpathos produces excellent wine and honey, while the rare Skaros fish, which is found only in the waters around the island, should be tasted in one of the local seafood taverns.
