ASTYPALEA

With a coastline longer (110km) than its expanse (98 sq.km), this is an island of unique morphology as, in its middle, the land is replaced by a narrow lane of sandy terrain, as if to form a lengthy, double-sided beach. The landscape of Astypalea resembles strongly that of the Cycladic islands, although it is a part of the Dodecanese, due to its low vegetation and its housing, painted in the characteristic bright white. The history of Astypalea, which is named after the wife of mighty Poseidon, the ancient God of the Sea, begins in the prehistoric period, during which it was first inhabited. Astypalea is worth visiting for many reasons. There are many sights, such as the imposing medieval castle, the beautiful churches (Panagia Portairitisa), the monasteries, and the remains of the ancient past. There also are, of course, marvelous beaches, which gently fade into crystal clear waters. In the village of Analipsi, there are Hellenistic mosaics and rare archaeological findings, while in Vathy there is the striking Drakos Cave. In the summertime, excursions are scheduled so that visitors can also see the Negrou Cave and some of the nearby islets, all surrounded by waters of a most amazing alteration of colors. Although it remains unscathed by the massive inflow of tourists, Astypalea has significantly developed its infrastructure. It has quality shopping places and well-equipped hotels. The services provided are of the highest standards; recreation and entertainment is available in all over the island. There are also football fields, basketball and tennis courts, water sports facilities, while the visitor also has the opportunity to participate in the particularly colorful and welcoming local festivals. Its traditional specialties are "Pougia" (sweet cheese pie), "arantissa" (lentils), "kopanisti", and the local cheese. All year round, Astypalea can be visited by plane from Athens and by ferryboats from the port of Piraeus. Ferries arrive from the ports of Rhodes, Amorgos, Anafi, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Ios, Syros, Crete, Kalymnos. Fast ferries arrive from Kalymnos, Rhodes and Kos, but only during the summer.
