The picturesque island of Lipsi is a quiet place that covers a surface area of 23 sq. km and has a population of about 700 inhabitants. It has known civilization since the prehistoric years, as early settlements developed here during the Neolithic period. As the waves of the sea never ceased to fall upon its shores, waves of Cares, Leleges, Minoans, Dorians and Ionians were added to its human assets, their succession often signalling the coming of a new era. The main sights are the church of St. Ioannis Theologos, the medieval castle -surrounded by ancient tombs- and many churches. There is also the neatly maintained Ecclesiastical and Popular Art Museum, but most will spare little time off from their romantic trips in the rough Aegean landscape. The gentle slopes of the low hills descend gracefully to the shoreline framed by golden sand or smooth pebbles to form beautiful beaches such as Platys Gialos, Chachlakoura, Marathi, Tiganakia, Chochlia, Katsadia, and more. Though Lipsi is considered as a quiet island for relaxation, entertainment options exist in the form of a few small coffee shops, bars and taverns, while the two traditional local festivals -one held on August 23rd and the other at the beginning of September- can become quite exciting. Ferryboats departing from Piraeus link Lipsi all year round to Rhodes, Tilos, Patmos, Nissyros, Leros, the Cyclades (Syros), and the Eastern Aegean islands. Also, all year round the island is linked by speed boats to Kos, Leros, Kalymnos, Patmos, and the eastern Aegean islands (Samos). Once used as a place of exile, today it is obvious that those sending here undesirable individuals had no idea whatsoever of how this place truly is; they did not know that they were doing them a favor by sending them to a beautiful land with fresh seafood and delicious wine.
