Chalki, the island of peace and friendship of youth worldwide, is one of the smallest islands of the Dodecanese. It covers an area of 28 sq.km and has a population of about 350 inhabitants. Nimborio is its capital -and only- town. Its name was given due to the many copper-mines that existed on the island in ancient times. It has many sights such as the old town, the Church of St. John, the neoclassic town hall, the burnt cave, the medieval castle of the knights of the order of St. John, the picturesque islet of Alimia, and the numerous idyllic beaches, many of which are accessible only by the sea. The island of Chalki attracts visitors mainly during the summer, but this is also limited, with the exception of the international youth peace and friendship convention held in early September. Visitors who wish to find a beautiful and tranquil island to retreat will find their paradise on the island of Chalki. There are a few hotels and rooms for rent, coffee shops, taverns, bars, a tourist information office, taxi boats, and many warm and friendly traditional festivities of cultural interest. Finally, local cuisine offers delicious specialties such as lamb filled with hand-made pasta and the renowned specialty of Chalki, the famous "Sykalakia". Access is provided from the port of Pireaus by ferry boat, while there are frequent routes offering easy access to and from the island of Rhodes.
