GENERAL INFORMATION

A breath away from Athens and Piraeus, Salamina is in fact, the part of the Greek capital which still maintains its insular characteristics. Beautiful landscapes and crystal clear beaches in the south, along with lots of "activity" are some of the elements which make Salamina an escape island. The island covers a surface area of 95 sq. km. Thousands of tourists go by every year.

HISTORY - CULTURE

The historical course of the island is closely linked to - due to the small distance separating it - from Athens and Megara, the big neighbours who often disputed over the island. Of course, the single most important moment historical event was the Battle of Salamina in 480 BC which took place on the island"s beaches, a victory which favoured the Greeks over the Persians.

SIGHTS

In Koulouri (the island"s main town) one can visit the Byzantine "Faneromeni" monastery, in Ambelakia the Acropolis of the ancient city and the monastery of Aghios Nicholaos in Moulki. These, sites, added to the breath-taking views on the opposite coast and to the beautiful morphology of the island will fascinate the visitor.

ENTERTAINMENT - SPORTS - SHOPPING

The visitor can find on the most popular beaches : many restaurants, night clubs and water sport, a good road network and organisation along with a market which covers all the visitors needs, these are the main characteristics of Salamina concerning this section. Internal transportation and nice hotels are also a nice surprise on this paradise.
