LEROS

Information | Photo Gallery | Map

Leros is located between the islands of Patmos and Kalymnos. It has a population of about 8000 inhabitants and it covers a total area of 55 sq.km. It has been inhabited since ancient times, and shared the same historical course with the other islands of the Dodecanese. The island surprises its visitors with the abundance and the quality of its beauties, many of which easily match those of much more popular tourist destinations. The capital town hosts a number of interesting sights such as the Roman fortress at the port of Platanos, the well preserved ?Castle", a monastery built on ancient ruins on the hill of Apitini, and the old flour-mill in the settlement of Aghia Marina. There is also a library with historical archives. Significant churches and monasteries can be found in the areas of Alinda, Lakki and Xirokambo, as well as interesting remains of an Old Christian Basilica and an ancient temple at Partheni. Leros can easily compete with most of the islands of the Dodecanese as far as entertainment, shopping, and sports are concerned. The capital town, Platanos, and the settlements of Lakki and Alinda provide quality accommodations in many hotels and rooms-to-let. There are many entertainment facilities, restaurants and taverns, and the overall services provided on the island are quiet satisfactory (petrol stations, taxi station, transportation networks, repair shops, sea transportation, travel agencies, and more). There is a variety of beaches, some of which -Pandeli, Alinda, Vromolitho, and Gournes- offer tourists the opportunity to enjoy themselves with water sports activities. Trekkers will enjoy walking along the winding paths of the island, which lead to successive bays and remote beaches. Also, the visitor should not miss out on shopping ceramics, cutlery, and local sweets in the traditional market. Traditional festivities taking place on the island that can be considered as a chance for locals and tourists to get together. There are flights carried out from Athens to the airport of Leros all year long and a ferryboat service from the port of Piraeus. There is an Archaeological Museum in Aghia Marina and a Historical and Folk Art Museum in Alinda, none of which should be missed.
