General Information
The island of Antiparos is located just off the coast of the island of Paros, of which it was a part some millennia ago. Charming, popular sandy beaches alternate with reclusive rocky bays, thus offering both fun and tranquility within the distance of a short walk. The remains of the medieval castle and the aura of mystery that surrounds one of the most impressive caves of Greece, raise interest, while the hospitality of the local populace promises a wonderful experience in Antiparos. Antiparos, one of the smallest inhabited islands of Cyclades is the opportune choice for those who seek for a combination of relaxation with the cosmopolitan life of the adjacent Paros. Its population is no more than 900 residents, while its extent covers 35 sq.km.
History - Culture
Long centuries ago, during prehistoric times, Antiparos ?along with its numerous peripheral islets- was attached to Paros. Geological commotions and a rise of the sea level separated this land into two islands with many surrounding islets, once peaks of hills that plunged into the waters. On two of these, Saliagos and Despotiko, archaeological research has uncovered the remnants of a large city dating back to the Neolithic Era, a relic of a civilization that was greatly advanced for its time (painted pottery dating as far back as 4000 BC). It went by the centuries of antiquity quietly, looming in the shadow of its larger neighbor. In the middle ages it belonged to the Byzantine empire, which lost it to the Franks, as they in turn did to the Venetians. Endless pirate raids were repelled with the construction of the castle, until the island fell once more, this time to the Turks. It participated in the Greek War for Independence, and was liberated in 1830.
Sights
In addition to comely beaches and peaceful landscapes, the island has two significant sights. These are the ruins of the castle, dating back to the 14th-15th century, and the exquisite cave, which holds immense historical as well as aesthetic and scientific value. Enormous stalactites and stalagmites adorn it all along its course, many of which have inscriptions, holding the memory of those who visited the cave long ago, such as the Marquee De Nouandel in 1643. The castle is in truth a fortified settlement with a large central tower, the base of which can still be seen today.
Entertainment-Sports-Shopping
Antiparos has a fully developed tourist infrastructure, perhaps better than many larger islands. There are quality hotels, rooms for rent, fine taverns, coffee shops, pubs, bars, and night clubs. Nightlife is vivid, often lasting well into the next morning. Water sports activities are available on the most popular beaches (Kato Psaralyki).
Access
There are frequent ferryboat services from Piraeus to Paros, from where small boats or ferries sail to Antiparos every 30 minutes.
Alternative Tourism
Caving, archaeology, sporting (water sports, scuba diving, windsurfing, trekking).
