The beauteous island of Kea has a population of about 2000 permanent residents and covers a total area of 121 sq. km. Widely known in Greece as Tzia, this green island is ideal for those seeking peace, tranquility and proximity, as it can be visited even for one-day trips, being only one and a half hours ?or 12 nautical miles- away from Piraeus. Kea has many places of interest to see, such as the ancient cities of Karthaia and Poessa, connected by the ancient path that would wind through the oak forest; the monastery of the Virgin Mary at Kastriani, situated within a wild setting and with a unique view; the ancient theatre; the remains of a bronze age settlement at Agia Irini; and the imposing ancient sculpture -outside the main town of Loulis- of the Lion of Kea, overlooking the entrance of the port. In the main town, in Kountouro, and in the port of Korissia, there is a steadily increasing number and variety of taverns, bars and coffee shops. Nevertheless, the island remains a quiet place, closely bound to its tradition. Tourist resorts offer basketball, tennis, table tennis and sea sports facilities, while its waters are ideal for scuba diving, offering underwater antiquities to complement the beauty of the deep. Its forested surface offers wonderful paths for trekkers, while numerous local festivals take place during the summer, forming a perfect opportunity for pleasant cultural insights. Local products include honey, pasteli (honey-bound sesame bar), wine and other specialties made of barley. The local "paspala" should also be tried. Flying Dolphins sail from the Zea Marina in Piraeus and ferries from Lavrio on a regular timetable all year round, with a more frequent service in the summer.
